Christmas Traditions

This time of year can be fun especially for those waiting for a visit from Santa.  We all have traditions in our families.  Taking vacations, family movie nights, family dinners or even just bedtime routines.  It is Christmas time and I wanted to share some of the fun traditions my family has during this time.

Christmas Tree

Many people have Christmas trees.  One really neat tradition I am starting with my own children is having Christmas books under the tree instead of presents.  I will share a little story about why I am starting this tradition.  In past years I have had the tree up and the presents all under the tree after thanksgiving.  Then my little boys want to open the presents, we tell them no not yet, no not yet, no not yet….  Then they are not even interested in opening on Christmas morning.  I can see why it is easier for Santa to just come Christmas eve.  We love books in our family so this is another reason we have decided to start this tradition.  We have good Christmas stories that take time to read all the good ones.  Some of them are novels and not just picture books.  So far we are enjoying this new tradition.

I think believing is a very important part of Christmas time.  On of the biggest things we are trying to help our children believe in is Jesus.  So in our family we focus on the birth of Jesus and the fun stories that happened around that story.  We do have a visit from Santa.  Believing in Santa is a good thing.  We are on his extra good list and he visits us Christmas eve.  Then we have more time on Christmas day to visit with family far away and maybe remember that Jesus is the reason for the season.

It seems that Christmas has become more and more about the presents.  We have had years that we could hardly afford food and shelter early in our marriage.  So one tradition for us is giving homemade gifts.  Times have changed for us but it is still important to me that we not focus on the giving and getting of presents.  One tradition my sister has to help limit the gifts coming in is to give 3 gifts to each of her children.  Just like Jesus got 3 gifts.

One last fun thing we do in our family is decorating the Christmas tree.  I have a very limited space in our home for storage.  So each year we make new decorations for the tree and anything else we want to decorate.  We even have some evergreen trees we can trim and make wreaths out of.  Since we are doing home school it is a great theme for the month for art.  The traditions have grown in their meaning ever since becoming parents.  I just wanted to say Merry Christmas from my blog to you.  Please feel free to share any fun traditions you have with your family.  We are still building our traditions.
