Sometimes the hardest part of gardening is deciding what to grow. So many different seeds, then need different sun and water and growing seasons. My advice is to start. Start small, and just do something. I have found that it is such a miracle to watch nature. It is an amazing feeling to care for something, even if it is a plant.
How many plants?
I have tried to find a good reliable place to get the yields of different plants, and what I found is that no one knows. Each soil is different, each seed is different, the amount of sun your garden gets is different, the temperatures are dependent on where you live, the amount you water will be different, each plant needs something different, and even one year is different from another. For me Gardening is a great adventure and a special art form. If you plant more than you can use you can always share with friends or make new ones by sharing. I wish I had a better answer, it would simplify things.
Starting Seeds Indoors
You can always start seeds indoors. I found and tried 2 types of homemade pots type 1, and type 2. I use 3 or 2 layers of good quality paper towels instead of the newspaper, but the newspaper holds together better. I just worry about the roots getting through the paper, and the ink on the paper. It is nice to start the garden early and get fruit sooner. You can always buy starts, but part of the fun is watching the whole process. I believe all things are spiritual. So I want to know what kind of spiritual environment my plants have been in. If you love your garden the food will taste better. Gardening isn’t about saving money for me. It is a very big investment of both time and money to get things going. Gardening is about spending time with nature and growing better food. Mass production is cheep and easy. Even Jesus takes time for each of us one by one. That is how you produce lasting quality. Time, Love and effort.
Square Foot Gardening
The most effective and simple way of growing food at home that I have found is the square foot gardening method. The thing I like about this type of gardening is planing for square foot area, not just rows. I have adapted the teachings in the ways that work best for me. One thing I do different is I use the earth. Yes I have weeds, but I also have other helpful microorganisms that I think help the soil be more healthy. Taking time to weed the garden and talk to my plants is helpful for them and me. I don’t mind the weeding, but if weeding is a concern for you can have a container garden. That is all for now. I will post more about companion planting and designing a watering system that works best for you. I hope you have happy gardening.
